August 29 Meeting notes:

The first meeting is in the books!

Our managers for the year are

Website Manager: Arianna Ramirez

Calendar Manager: Trennise Lee

Secretary:  Elsy Siliezar

Material Manager: Bryam Vazquez

Next meeting

All members will look through the planting schedule for the year and identify 1 plant for September planting and 2 other plants for planting later on in the year.

Alex G. is going to research part shade butterfly plants that we could put in the butterfly bed.

On Thursday 9/5 we will be -
*making a decision about the kale
*discussing plant selections for the following week and identifying how we will get get seedlings or seeds as needed
*clearing out 3 of the four small beds on the west side of the garden
*weeding the herb bed and cutting back all the herbs
*resetting the blocks so the beds are once again, square
*renewing the beds with compost and microlife

On Thursday 9/12 we will be -
*clearing out the 2 small beds on the east side of the garden
*brainstorming solutions to the leaves & acorns problem
*resetting the blocks so the beds are once again, square
*calendaring the filling of the corner blocks and creating an invite for Omar's dad

2013-2014: It's time to kick off the 4th year of the Southwest Garden!

Thursday August 29, 2013 - the first garden club meeting of the year will take place in the Rm. 14 from 4:30pm - 6:00 pm

Welcome, intro to the garden club, brief presentation of the history of the SW garden [slides from the construction to the present day]

overview of positions & committees
 
Website manager – in charge of posting photos to the Garden blog site, also has final say on site design decisions
Calendar manager – in charge of calendaring planting days, harvest times, crop lists, activities and posting them on the garden’s google calendar
Secretary – in charge of taking minutes & attendance during meetings and writing a brief description of the activities completed on workdays, this info must be posted to the Garden blog site
Material manager – in charge of making sure all materials are collected and returned to the right place at the end of all work days
 
Committees:   
Recipe committee – in charge of finding and cataloging recipes that use ingredients we grow in the garden
Service committee – in charge of finding and organizing at least 2 outside service opportunities for the garden club
Plant purpose committee – in charge of researching and cataloging information on the plants in the native plant bed. In charge of recording and cataloging the insects found in the garden
compost committeein charge of researching composting and tracking what material the garden club disposed of that COULD be used for composting as we seek to determine if we can sustain a compost pile
 
Expectations for attendance –
*If we don’t take proper care of them, the plants may die.  Even if they don’t die, they won’t prosper & produce good fruits and vegetables for us.
If you will not be at a meeting [due to detention or sports]  or if you will be late to a meeting [due to a tutorial or retake], you let Ms. Pandya know by either telling her IN PERSON before the meeting OR, leaving a note on her monitor in the computer lab BEFORE the meeting. 
Names of garden club members will be posted in the cafeteria
*If you have 3 unexcused absences, you will be removed from the list and formally requested not to claim membership on resumes & applications

*need to identify potential shade, native plants that could be put in the butterfly bed – volunteer to research that?
